Minnesota Power offers a 25% rebate for qualifying solar thermal water heating systems. The maximum award for single-family customers is $2,000 per customer; $4,000 for 2-3 family unit buildings; $10,000 for buildings with 4 or more family units; and $25,000 for businesses. This program is available to the utility's residential, commercial, and industrial customers that receive retail electric service, subject to availability of funding.

The 2015 program funds will be awarded on a lottery basis. Customers applying for the SolarSense Thermal Water Heating program must submit a pre-application form between January 1 and February 28 in order to be considered in the lottery. All applications received during the lottery timeframe will be randomly organized and given a “lottery position”. SolarSense funds will be awarded based on those lottery positions. If more applications are received than funds available, a Reserve List will be created. Applicants will be notified of their application status and lottery position no later than March 31.

The following conditions apply to Minnesota Power's Solar Thermal Water Heater Rebate Program:

  • Systems must be installed on or before December, and must meet the 12-month installation completion timeline.
  • Minnesota Power's Solar Hot Water Rebate funds will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact Minnesota Power to determine availability of funds.
  • Systems must be installed by a solar energy installer (see web site for further details).
