CPS Energy solar rebate program

How much is the rebate?

Homeowners receive a $2,500 rebate on the installation of a solar photovoltaic system. There is an additional rebate of $500 of you use locally-produced solar panels.

Businesses get a rebate of $0.60 per AC watt for the first 25 kW, and $0.40 per AC watt per kW above 25 kW. If you use locally made solar panels, you get an additional $0.10 per watt rebate.

If you use a non-local installer, you will receive only 75% of the rebate amount.

The rebate is capped at 50% of the project cost. Most residential projects will easily reach that. Commercial projects have a maximum rebate of $80,000.

How to qualify

  • Project must be installed by a solar installer registered with CPS Energy
  • Equipment must be listed with the California Energy Commission
  • Solar panels must have at least a 20 year warranty, and inverters must have at least a 5 year warranty
  • Additional requirements exist (see the CPS Energy website for details)

How do I find a CPS Energy qualified contractor?

To qualify for the full rebate, you must use a local solar installer that is qualified by CPS Energy. If you use a non-local installer, you will receive only 75% of the rebate.

Locally made solar panels

Both the residential and commercial rebates offered by CPS Energy include a bonus for using locally made solar modules (panels).

While CPS Energy doesn’t actually define what qualifies as locally made, it’s pretty obvious that they are incentivizing people use to use Mission Solar.

Mission Solar is a company headquartered in San Antonio that manufacturers its panels in a factory that is also located in San Antonio.

Mission Solar panels are highly regarded and are made with monocrystalline silicon. They have a small, focused product lineup that includes an attractive all-black module.

Its products have a 25 year power warranty and a 10 or 12 year product warranty.

CPS Energy REC assignment

One of the requirements by CPS Energy is that you must assign your renewable energy certificates (REC) to CPS.

A REC (also called a Solar Renewable Energy Certificated or SREC) is a market-based tool that some states use to incentivize the development of solar energy.

Assigning the RECs to CPS means that the utility company will receive any incentives due to the green energy that your home solar panels generate.

This is not any cause for concern for the homeowner because, at the current time, Texas doesn’t have a viable market for RECs. This means that this requirement is really just a formality.

See the SRECTrade website to learn more about the REC market in Texas.

Current state of rebate program funding

The CPS Energy solar rebate program received an additional $15 million in funding as of December 2018, so the program is still open to new applications.

At the current time, $6.77 million is still available in the pool. Check out the CPS Energy website for the most current status.
